Designing electrical drives and power electronics for fascinating user experiences is my passion.
I have been working at Bosch Research since 2009 on advancing model-based design methods. The challenge that my team and I are dealing with is to model and solve large-scale optimization problems for designing e-drives and power electronics. The design targets are to achieve the highest possible performance and quality, at an affordable price, and with minimal usage of energy and raw material to save the environment. In order to tackle these challenging targets, our research work addresses several advanced optimization methods such as multiobjective optimization, free-shape and topology optimization, and AI-based optimization.
Please tell us what fascinates you most about research.
Creativity, passion, determination, patience, continuous learning, teamwork, goal orientation – all of those are elements that fascinate me and challenge me at the same time in my daily research work.
What makes research done at Bosch so special?

What research topics are you currently working on at Bosch?
My main research work is advancing modelling and optimization methods for electrical drives and power electronics. This involves mathematical modelling methods for many physical domains (electromagnetics, electronic circuits, thermodynamics, structural dynamics, etc.). Additionally, it addresses several advanced optimization methods such as multiobjective optimization, free-shape and topology optimization, and ultimately Artificial Intelligence, which enables more efficient optimization in larger design spaces within a shorter time.
What are the biggest scientific challenges in your field of research?
The major challenge that I am dealing with is to develop fascinating electrification products with the highest performance and quality standards and to make them available to many people all over the world at an affordable price. One essential prerequisite for all of that is to minimize the usage of raw material and energy resources to protect our environment.
How do the results of your research become part of solutions "Invented for life"?
Electrical drives and power electronics are already part of many products in our daily life; a few examples are e-bikes, washing machines, heat pumps, drills, etc. The importance of electrification products is significantly growing, motivated by the mega trend ‘electrified mobility’. My research work aims to make electrical drives and power electronics more efficient in terms of their energy consumption, more environmentally friendly in the utilization of raw materials, and more fascinating in terms of the user experience.
